Nor did Talupéké merit their attention. Nothing existed for the Clowns but the mercenaries, it appeared. Did they know that Woeden Surk had the mattoglin? Had the mercenaries assaulted one of the women? Whatever it was had smashed their alliance to pieces. The Clowns were out for blood.

Kereqa was the first to reach Talupéké. Kandri and Mektu, in their saddles at last, arrived to find the girl retching and spitting blood, her head in her grandmother’s lap.

“Surk broke two of her teeth,” Kereqa yelled over the wind, “and when we have avenged our comrade I will break that man’s arms and legs.”

“You won’t get the chance,” said Mektu. “The meat freaks are going to dice him.”

“She says the Nachasps fell into a trap. Their dead lie all about the tower.”

“We know,” said Kandri.

Chindilan appeared, eyes fixed on Talupéké. Even before his camel stopped he swung a leg over its withers.

“Do not dismount!” shouted Kereqa. Talupéké nodded, making a tortured sound in her throat. She pointed after the fleeing mercenaries.

“But the Clowns—” said Mektu.

“To hell with the Clowns!” cried Kereqa. “That great hog Surk has the Letter of Cure! Ride, ride him down! Now of all moments you must not lose faith.”

Talupéké made the sound again, mouth working, tears in her eyes.

“The mercenaries will not escape,” said Kereqa. “Sooner or later, they must turn and fight the Clowns. At that moment you must help them win— and then deal with Surk. That is your best hope, Hinjumans! Do not squander it.”

“But Tal—” began Chindilan.

Talupéké’s hand found a stone. She flung it. The smith’s leg jerked; he cried out in pain.

Talupéké spit out a mouthful of blood. “What are you waiting for, you shit monkeys?” she screamed. “Ride!”
